Class III: The Return of the Bling - Sam C
This class is the third in a series of three classes taught by Michael Klieman, Layne Clemen, and Sam Curran, called the Lord of the Paint. You can take one of these classes or all three. We will use the same bust for all three classes, and each class will treat a different area of the bust.
This class will focus on painting the armor in a style called nonmetallic metals, or NMM. As opposed to true metallic metals, which are paints with reflective powders, NMM is the process of making something appear metallic with matte paints through the understanding of light and material properties, much like classic painters. This style, lauded by noobs and experienced painters alike, offers unparalleled opportunities for self expression and exhibition of skill.
Half composition and half rendering, this class will first conceptualize metals as a warped reflection of their environment; a bad mirror if you will. You will learn why your eyes know something is metal and then how to fool them. We will put our understanding to the test on the class bust by first sketching light and shadows, and telling a story. Then you will proceed to refining, adding texture and character that hint at the history of the armor and indeed the character.
The first class covers painting faces (Class One: The Fellowship of the Face by Michael Klieman) and the second class, will deal with textures (The Two Textures (by Layne Clemen).
