Beyond the Torchlight TTRPG - Playtest

Beyond the Torchlight is a fast paced RPG system designed to run West Marches style campaigns. Players exist in a world in its twilight age of existence. A mysterious magical realm known as the Wynwild is colliding and merging with our own and the wilderness is now fraught with wild and dangerous creatures. Players must venture out into the wilderness to gather resources and treasure to try and ensure the survival of not only themselves, but their town which exists at the edges of an empire.

Gameplay is fast paced rollover d20 system. Players cane build characters that fall within traditional archetypes or tropes, or use combinations of "characteristics" to build a character unique to themselves. Combat is dangerous and uses combat grid of "stances" and positioning similar to a chessboard to encourage tactical decisions.

Playtest Objectives Objectives of this play test will be to test the core game mechanics including non-combat skill checks/saves, wilderness exploration, and combat.

Dice Mechanics Dice mechanics in BtT are a simplified roll over d20 system. A unified system of "Enhancements" or "Impairments" can add or subtract a 1d4 modifier to a dice roll, but there are otherwise no stat bonuses applied to dice rolls. Saves and Difficulty Check systems are simplified and players will try to roll over one of their own stats or roll over the stat of an NPC.

Characteristics and Traits Players will create characters with four basic traits (Strength, Agility, Fortitude, Cunning) that will govern most of their dice rolls within the game. These characteristics can be modified through traits or the character's background. For example, a character trait of "Nimble and Reactive" or "Stealthy and Subtle" can be applied to a scene through role-play or directly to a check or save. These same traits also guide general character aesthetics and personalities, allowing for rapid character creation.

Character Concepts Characters in this world are not heroes when they start. They are farmers, laborers, and other everyday folk trying to survive in a world thrust into the midst of dramatic change. Character backgrounds may provide valuable insight when challenges and encounters arise in the world. With time, luck, and skill characters can rise to accomplish great deeds. They will collect valuable treasure and artifacts when adventuring, and must decide if they wish to keep those items to enhance their skills and abilities or trade them back to the empire to gain valuable resources for their town's survival.

Combat Combat takes place on a combat grid, but differs from traditional tabletop grid based play. Combat proceeds in "Action Lanes" where players can only engage other enemies in a similar action lane. Within those action lanes, characters can take stances such as "Aggressive" to address both an enemy or their companions. The system is designed to encourage characters to move while providing tactical options around a play field. Combat should generally be viewed as dangerous and characters can be downed quickly if they are not careful.
