Soldiers of Steele - A Customizable Mech RPG Playtest
The year was 1929: it was the height of the roaring 20s, and the economy had never been better! However, with every rise comes an inevitable fall. On October 23rd, a small dip in the stock market was quickly overshadowed when a massive alien appeared over the Statue of Liberty and decimated the city’s population. Five years later, things have only gotten worse. Colossal eldritch monsters roam America, and there’s only one thing keeping the American dream alive: man-made mechs called Steele Soldiers, piloted by only the best of the best are sent to eradicate the Oddity menace America now faces.
Soldiers of Steele (SoS) is a mech-piloting game with elements of horror, a heavy focus on mech-on-monster combat, and detailed customization.

Pitch: The year was 1929: it was the height of the roaring 20s, and the economy had never been better! However, with every rise comes an inevitable fall. On October 23rd, a small dip in the stock market was quickly overshadowed when a massive alien appeared over the Statue of Liberty and decimated the city’s population. Five years later, things have only gotten worse. Colossal monsters roam America, and there’s only one thing keeping the American dream alive: man-made mechs called Steele Soldiers, piloted by only the best of the best are sent to eradicate the Oddity menace America now faces.
You play as one of these pilots (known informally as Cogs) and you’ve had the stark realization that “best of the best” might be a stretch. You and your compatriots will create a freelance company and take whatever missions you can get -- as long as they pay well.
In this playtest, you will go through character and mech creation followed by a combat mission. Choose between one of three missions: Free the people of Guntersville, Alabama from their sinister captor; protect the beloved white squirrels of Olney, Illinois from certain doom; or save the hotshot auto parts mogul from more than financial ruin in Roseville, Michigan.
Soldiers of Steele (SoS) is a mech-piloting game with elements of horror, a heavy focus on mech-on-monster combat, and detailed customization. Create mechs by combining utility modules with custom built weapons, and use creative tactics to take on bigger and bigger missions in pursuit of the next paycheck. Success and failure are determined by a dice pool system and the exploitation of the situation and environment. Battles are tense, and lives are on the line -- all in the name of the American dream.
