It is April 1917. President Wilson has asked Congress to declare war on Germany. Congress deliberates while an unprepared nation scrambles to mobilize for the coming conflict. A small electric company on the Maine coast reports unexplained power drains on the local grid. With war looming, naval officials became concerned that it could be the Germans. Are they using the grid to recharge submarine batteries? Is it powering a secret wireless station?
A group of investigators meet in the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, tasked with discovering the source of the power drain. You will travel to Portland to interview a suspected German deserter. After that, you will travel to a remote coastal island to get to the bottom of the power drain. Discretion is a top priority. The local canneries are an essential food source for overseas troops. The government doesn't want widespread panic to impact production. Your cover story is that you are opening and preparing Penny's family home to host naval wives safely away from the shipyard, which could be a target. Of course, this being the Cthulhu world, the Germans won't be the primary concern.
We will use the latest Cthulhu rules with pre-generated characters. As We only have 4 hours to act out a story collectively, the game will be rules-light and primarily narrative-driven.
Lieutenant Charles Good: A naval architect recently commissioned as an officer. Selected because of your wife's connections. You are eager to prove your mettle in hopes of an assignment at sea.
Penelope Good: Charles' wife's family is from the island. You spent your childhood sailing on your father's merchant ship though. You don't have as much local knowledge as everyone assumes. Still, you want your husband to succeed.
Dr. Paul Lee: You are a wireless researcher at MIT. The Navy funds your research. The fine print says you are subject to naval service in the event of war. If you refuse, jail is likely. You hope to get back to Cambridge as quickly as possible.
Anthony Allaire: Canadian naval officer. Your ship is at the shipyard and is under repair. You have fought German submarines and are a subject matter expert. You are anxious about missing your ship's departure.
Eben Smith: You are a US Marine sergeant in charge of a small security detachment. You have seen enough combat that you are in no rush to get to France. The longer this takes, the better.
