Original Dungeons & Dragons focused game play on the "dungeon" as the focus for character action. However, the game did not define the concept of the "dungeon" in any great detail - dungeons are, in fact, a "missing element" of the game. But this was probably part of the success of the new game, as it allowed referees to make the game their own. This "missing element" will be discussed through a sociological and game studies perspective.
