Inspired by the techniques of Caravaggio and the Old Masters, this 6-hour masterclass will teach you how to paint rich, lifelike skin tones using dramatic contrasts, smooth blending, and nuanced color variation.

We’ll explore chiaroscuro (strong light and shadow), glazing techniques, and subtle color shifts to create depth, expression, and realism. By the end, you’ll be able to apply these classical methods to miniatures, bringing your figures to life with painterly skin tones that tell a story.

Materials

Paint & a black primed miniature with exposed skin will be provided to students.

Students are asked to bring their favorite bushes, including Fine detail brushes (size 0, 1, and 2 recommended) Paper towels and brush cleaner

Skill Level & Prerequisites This class is designed for intermediate to advanced painters who are comfortable with: ✔ Basic brush control and layering techniques ✔ Blending and glazing fundamentals ✔ Understanding light placement on miniatures

This is not a beginner-level skin tone class—we will focus on refined techniques, color complexity, and dramatic lighting.
