Common Abbreviations

Campaign: Used to differentiate between Forgotten Realms and Eberron: Oracle of War games. Characters in one campaign cannot be used with or interact with the other.

DCI Number: The DCI was originally created to track official Magic: The Gathering tournament play, eventually expanding to cover other organized play such as Adventurers League. Players would register and receive a unique number for tracking their progress, though in the case of Adventurers League this was primarily used by gaming locations to report attendance to Wizards of the Coast.

These numbers are no longer required for Adventurers League play. You can still get one for free at https://accounts.wizards.com, though. You will find many players still use them among each other, either during magic item trades or Dungeon Masters providing them for players to record on their logsheets.

Downtime: Meta currency used in Adventurers League Forgotten Realms campaign for various purposes. Earned when you take a level. More information about how it's earned and what it can be used for can be found in the Adventurers League Player's Guide for the Forgotten Realms.

Players in the Eberron: Oracle of War campaign do not earn downtime or renown, though there are chances to gain prestige, memberships, and other rewards through Legacy Events.

Epic: A special Adventurers League event where multiple tables are all playing the same adventure together. Often an Epic will have multiple character Tiers playing at the same time. There are time limits as well as certain criteria that needs to be met in order to successfully "win" the Epic.

In an Epic all the tables will work together, with the actions of one table affecting what's going on at other tables. It's chaotic, fun, and completely unlike the RPG game you may be used to! Epics can only be run at sanctioned Adventurers League events, such as conventions and game days.

Faction: Factions are organizations in the Forgotten Realms campaign. Different factions have different goals, and it's up to you to determine if you wish to join up with one and which one will best fit your needs.

In recent Seasons faction membership has taken a less prominent role in Adventurers League play, but if you'd like to read about the different factions you can visit https://dnd.wizards.com/dungeons-and-dragons/story/factions. Information about the benefits of faction membership as well as the requirements can be found in Adventurers League Player's Guide for the Forgotten Realms campaign.

Note that you need to either have the Faction Agent background from the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide or you need to swap out the feature of your current background (the part of your background that gives you a mechanical in-game benefit) in order to join a faction.

Legacy Event: Legacy Events are earned in the Eberron: Oracle of War campaign. They will be listed on the Adventure Record you receive at the end of the game and will generally provide some benefit to your character (such as gold, treasure, or some other perk for your character). These are the Eberron version of the Forgotten Realms campaign's Story Awards.

Logsheet: Every player in the Adventurers League Forgotten Realms campaign must maintain a logsheet for each of their characters. This logsheet can take any form you like--there are official logsheets offered in the Adventurers League Player and DM Pack at dmsguild.com, or you can make one up yourself. There are even online logsheets like https://adventurersleaguelog.com.

The logsheet is used to track a character's rewards from one adventure to the next, as well as magic item trades, status changes (curses, etc). More information about what should be on the logsheet can be found in the Adventurers League Player's Guide for the Forgotten Realms.

Players in the Eberron: Oracle of War campaign will not need to use these logsheets, as at the end of each adventure the DM will hand out an Adventure Record sheet for you to fill out.

Magic Item Limit (MIL): Starting in Season 9 there are limits to how many permanent magic items a character can have. This limit increases as characters advance to higher tiers of play. Magic Item Limits are explained in the Adventurers League Player's Guide for the respective campaign.

Open: Similar to an Epic, the D&D Open is an event that is run only a few times per year. The difference is that instead of being cooperative like the Epic, the Open is a competitive event, pitting tables against each other for points. Whatever table finishes with the most points wins!

PHB+1: You'll often see or hear references to the PHB+1 rule. This is explained in the Adventures League Player's Guide, and means that when creating a character you can use the Player's Handbook and one other resource.

This means that for example, you could create a Human Rogue (both from the Player's Handbook, or PHB), and at level 3 choose the Swashbuckler subclass from Xanathar's Guide to Everything and that would be a legal combination, and Xanathar's Guide would be considered your "+1." If however you wanted to that Rogue to be a Goblin from Volo's Guide to Monsters you'd be limited to only subclasses in the PHB when you hit level 3--you've already picked Volo's Guide as your "+1" so you can't now choose a subclass from Xanathar's Guide.

More information can be found in the Adventurers League Player's Guide, including what resources are allowed for character creation.

Renown: Renown is a measure of your fame (or infamy!) in the Forgotten Realms campaign. Starting in Season 9 your Renown is tied to the Tier of your character. See Appendix 1 of the Adventurers League Player's Guide for the Forgotten Realms for more information about Renown and its benefits.

Players in the Eberron: Oracle of War campaign do not earn downtime or renown, though there are chances to gain prestige, memberships, and other rewards through Legacy Events.

Season: Seasons are used in the Forgotten Realms campaign to refer to the different storylines and rules that have been in play since the start of Adventurers League play. We are currently in Season 9 of Adventurers League play. So far we have had:

While each of these seasons has coincided with the release of an official hardcover adventure book, not every hardcover book has its own season. For example, the Ghosts of Saltmarsh book released in the Summer of 2019 did not come with its own new season.

IMPORTANT: Regardless of which season's content you're playing, you will ALWAYS use the current season's rules for character creation and general play.

Story Award: Some Forgotten Realms campaign adventures offer a Story Award at the end if you complete certain objectives during the adventure. These awards can give you various benefits, such as bonuses when interacting with people in future adventures, or other perks for your character.

In the Eberron: Oracle of War campaign the equivalent of these are Legacy Events.

Tier: There are four Tiers of play in Adventurers League, and your character level determines which Tier you're in.

Tier Levels
1 1-4
2 5-10
3 11-16
4 17-20

When you're signing up for an event, note the Tier of the adventure. You must have a character in that Tier in order to play in that game.

Adventurers League characters start at level 1 and reach higher levels through play. You can't create a character at a higher level unless you have campaign documentation giving you authorization to do so.
