The quote above comes from Sir Terry Pratchett's novel Making Money, a fantasy novel about the introduction of paper banknotes to the city of Ankh-Morpork. The sentiment can be applied to many situations in many of his other books as well.
Magic using characters, be they mages, wizards, sorcerers, witches, warlocks, or just magic-users, are a staple of both fantasy fiction and role-playing games. They existed as an original class in Dungeons & Dragons and are a standard player class in most RPGs. In roleplaying this ranges from eccentric robe-wearers in a loosely-inspired mediaeval analog to contemporary people searching for ascension to far future psychics drawing on the power of Chaos. Fictional mages from film, television, and novels include Mickey in The Sorcerers’ Apprentice, the Magicians of Lev Grossman’s novels of the same name, and the varied cultists search for a way to summon Cthulhu.
This convention is a celebration of magic and those foolhardy souls willing to draw on cosmic powers at their own peril. Throw caution to the wind and apply magic to the most inadvisable situations possible.
