Leaders and representatives of the galaxy’s varied and disparate peaceful civilizations have gathered on the planet of Naboo, in the human capital of Theed, to discuss better coordination of their resistance to the Galactic Empire. Spanning many cultures and worlds, but not necessarily all friendly or trusting with each other, each Resistance Leader brought with them only a small security force as surety for each other’s good conduct.
Midway through the conference, Imperial Star Destroyers and Interdictor Cruisers exited hyperspace in close orbit to Naboo to establish a blockade. Ground forces for invasion and occupation were landed, and a heavy orbital bombardment commenced, destroying the major roads and bridges around Theed. Kept secret from the Empire, though, the Naboo had recently deployed an extremely robust energy shield over the Theed Regional Spaceport, with strong enough ray-shielding and blast-shielding to resist orbital bombardment for weeks. The shield, however, does not extend entirely to the ground, leaving the spaceport vulnerable to ground assault.
Imperial ground assault forces, intended to invade and occupy Theed, must suddenly pivot to prevent the evacuation of the conference attendees, who are racing toward the safety of the spaceport with their entourages to make their escapes. Caught off-guard by the unknown energy shield and the rapid movement of the Resistance Leaders, Imperial ground forces are sprinting in close pursuit to prevent evacuation.
