Event Submissions, COVID and Masks and New Guests

Greetings Seekers!

November is nearly upon us and that means we have about 60 days to submit events for Material (physical) Gary Con. Ethereal events will be accepted into 2022, so don't worry too much if you are attending virtually. Dave and Skip certainly appreciate all GMs submitting as soon as possible so they have more time to schedule games for it is indeed an arduous task. I want to give my hearty thanks to all of the GMs who run events at Gary Con, whether you run one or ten. GMs are the backbone of any convention and we are no exception. I have had more than a few people tell me that they feel some trepidation at the prospect of running events at Gary Con because of all the "expert" GMs that attend. I'll share something with you, I still feel a little nervous every time I get behind the screen. That's a good sign that you care and want to bring your best to the table. I encourage you to give it a whirl! Pick a scenario you know well from your favorite system and run it. I bet you will have some nerves at first, but once you get rolling it will be a fun experience and you will have contributed to others enjoyment too. Plus you will get some nice perks ( GM rewards). Just go to the TTE page and click on HOST and select Submit Event from the dropdown.

A few weeks ago I made a news post regarding our stance on coronavirus and precautions we were taking to help protect everyone coming to celebrate with us in Lake Geneva. You can find that post and video here CV-19 Stance. When you pick up your badge, we are requiring everyone to show proof of vaccination or, if you can't vaccinate for medical reasons, we will accept a negative coronavirus test within the last 72 hours. I want to emphasize that vaccination is preferred and we encourage everyone who is able to get vaccinated prior to coming to Gary Con. We are also requiring everyone to wear masks over their nose and mouth while they are at Gary Con. I understand that some of you are opposed to wearing a mask while gaming because it may muffle your voice or make it hard to read lips etc. This may mean that some choose not to attend this year, and I respect your freedom to do so. However I am committed to the safety of everyone coming to celebrate with us. I discussed this at length with several people in the community prior to making a decision, including my very own brother, Ernie Gygax. He expressed his concerns over the difficulty of running long games for a large number of players. In the end we agreed that it was the right thing to do, and even though he won't be running games at Gary Con, he will be there to socialize and celebrate the life of our father. And that is really the most important thing, sharing camaraderie with our gamer family, and in this case my immediate family.

For those of you who are wondering, we plan on offering tableside food and beverage service, a feature much beloved by our attendees. We will require all to stay masked unless you are actively eating or drinking, similar to the guidelines used during air travel. If the health guidelines change before we get to Gary Con we will adjust accordingly to best look out for everyone's health and safety. I've always said gamers are god people, and I believe that with some courtesy and mutual respect we can have a great time together at Gary Con XIV. And I for one have sorely missed gathering with all of you in Lake Geneva the past couple years.

I have some exciting announcements as well! While I was at Gamehole this month, I confirmed a couple additional Guests. Mike Pondsmith will be attending his first Gary Con next year. You probably know Maximum Mike as the designer of Cyberpunk and lead at R Talisorian Games. We are very excited to have him at GC XIV. Additionally, both Mike Mearls (5e D&D) and amazing artist, Erol Otus, are returning as well!

Have a Happy Halloween and Game On!

Luke Gygax
